Instant Potato patty with poha or red cabbage

 You can use some of the instant mixes from your cupboard to make these easy and delicious patty/ cutlets. Instant beaten rice or chopped cabbage is mixed with mashed potatoes and few other ingredients.  If you want these crispy then coat them with other instant mix like instant dal, instant kadhi etc before frying.

Potato patty with poha or red cabbage-

 Yield- about 10-12 tikkis/patties  (depends on the size you shape these). 

1 cup Instant beaten rice mix (chopped red cabbage)
¾ -1 cup mashed potatoes (You can use instant mashed potato flakes to make this or use 2 potatoes)
¼ cup chopped onions
Red chili powder - 1 tsp
Chat masala - 1/2 tsp
Lemon juice/dry mango pd - 1 tsp
Black pepper powder - 1/4 tsp to 1/2 tsp
Salt-1/2 -1 tsp
1 Tbsp  rava idli mix/ kadhi mix/ dal mix/ chick pea pd stir-fry mix for coating the patties (Using any of these instant mix is optional. use it when you want crunchy patties)

1. Soak poha mix in 3/4 cup water for 4 to 5 minutes. If you are using red cabbage, chop it finely.


2. Prepare mashed potatoes using instant potato. You can cook and mash potatoes too if needed.

Different Ways to cook potatoes-
1. If using potatoes- Wash the potatoes by scrubbing them well.
    Cut unpeeled potatoes into 4 and put this along with ¼ cup -1/2 cup water and cook till soft. 
    Drain if there is any water remaining.You can use this hot water (got from boiling or steaming)
    to soak instant poha mixture
   Cool and peel them. 
2.You can cook them in  microwave (loosely covered) for 5 minutes. 
3. Put some oil and onion into the rice cooker pan and cover and switch on the rice cooker to ‘cook’ mode. When it becomes translucent switch off the flame.

 4. Take the beaten rice/ chopped red cabbage in a bowl.To this add onions, mashed potatoes.Add red chili powder, chat masala, lemon juice, pepper powder and mix well to form thick dough. If you like peanuts in your patty, you can add 2 tbsp of peanut pd mix for stir-fry into this mixture .

Shape them to small, round, slightly flattened tikki’s.
Dip this tikki on both sides in the coating mixture till they are lightly coated.
Arrange these in the rice cooker or a grill plate or a non-stick griddle.

 Frying them in the rice cooker-

Add a few drops or oil and arrange 2-3 patties and cover and cook in the rice cooker. 


You will observe that after few mins the cooker automatically switches back to warm mode . Now flip the patties to other side and wait for some time. You will be able to switch back to ‘cook’ mode. Your tikki will be light or dark golden depending on how long you will cook it. 

Frying them on the stove top-


Heat oil   (2 tsp) in tava. place these tikkis on non-stick tava and fry them on medium low flame till they become golden brown in color. Now flip to the other side , sprinkle a tsp of oil and roast them till they are crispy.
Poha/Red Cabbage tikkis tastes good with with ketchup or chutney or pickle .They taste good at room temperature too.

You can cut them into halves or quarters to fit between bread slices.


You can pack them inside a roti or between 2 bread slices and carry them in your lunch box.

Masaledar sookhe alu - spice coated potatoes

If you have prepared the Chole masala then making this is a breeze.I had shared the recipe in an earlier post. Go a ahead and make this and do write to me if you have any doubts. There are many more ways of making this. Just change the masala with chutney pd, mint chutney.

Wash the small potatoes well.
Heat water in the rice cooker vessel and add the potatoes and cover and cook for about 10-15 mins.
You need not cook them completely. Cool them by pouring cold water or just leave them to cool.
Peel these potatoes. Wipe the rice cooker vessel.
Pour 1 tbsp oil in the dried rice cooker vessel .Transfer the peeled potatoes into it and cover it with it’ s lid.
Press the ‘cook’ button. Allow the potatoes to turn golden. Keep stirring the potatoes in between for even browning.
Sprinkle chole masala and salt. Stir well till each of these potatoes are nicely coated with the masala.
You can eat these potatoes as a snack or make a meal out of it by stuffing it between slices of bread or wrapped in rotis.

You can cook these potatoes in pressure cooker (but switch off before the first whistle or you will have mashed potatoes) or a sauce pan too.
If you are planning to make an entire meal use this quick cooking item to save time.

The above plate contains chick pea gravy, radish stuffed paratha with yoghurt on top, puranpoli (obbattu- sweet stuffed roti) along with our masaledar alu.
